1 Look and read. Choose the animals, plants and the threats to both.

Senegal is a country in northwest Africa. It’s got deserts, grasslands and forests. There are any wildlife centres and parks for protecting plants and animals.

The Fathala Wildlife Reserve in Senegal protects animals and plants. In the forest, there are lions, monkeys, giraffes and zebras. In and around the rivers, there are crocodiles and many types of birds. The animals are threatened by loss of habitat and hunting. The baobab tree is the oldest type of tree in Africa. It stores water in its huge trunk. People eat the leaves and the seeds. The baobab trees are under threat from climate change.

      dundun

In Senegal, musicians get together to sing traditional stories about their history. Everybody joins in playing different instruments and singing. There are many different types of drums.

The djembe’s got a top part to play with your hands and a smaller bottom part to hold. The dundun is a large cylinder made from wood. The tama’s got strings around it that the musicians press and pull as they hit the drum with a stick. The musicians make the tama sound like somebody is talking.

Some musicians play a string instrument called the kora. It is like a guitar, but it’s got twentyone strings. The musician plays eleven strings with the left hand and ten with the right hand.
