SPQR stands for "Senatus Populusque Romanus", which means "Senate and People of Rome" in Latin.

It's an expression you can find anywhere in Rome: buildings, garbage bins, taxis, etc.

      Citizenship competence

Citizenship competence is the ability to act as responsible citizens and to fully participate in civic and social life.

It includes civic literacy, values in a democratic culture with respect for human rights, reflection on ethical issues of our times and developing a sustainable lifestyle in agreement with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

      Sustainable Development Goals

Reduce inequality within and among countries.

At first, only patricians had political rights.

But plebeians fought for their rights. From the 5th century BC they had representation, the tribune of the plebs (short for ‘plebeians’), who defended their interests in the senate.

From the 4th century BC, plebeians could be elected magistrates and senators.

      Dress code

The toga was a civic and moral emblem. Deviation from the dress code gave enemies of a magistrate ammunition to attack him.

The expansion of the Roman Empire

Provinces were created to make Roman administration more effective. Each province was ruled by a governor, and paid taxes to Rome.

            Was Julius Caesar an emperor?

            t12-multimedia

            Think

In the first century BC, the Republic was weakened by corruption and internal conflicts. The power of the army grew. However, important generals opposed each other and civil wars broke out.

The general Julius Caesar was victorious in one of these wars, and was proclaimed dictator.

In 44 BC he was assassinated by senators who were sympathetic to the Republic. His nephew Octavian won a new civil war.

            When did the Republic end?

When Octavian became Emperor Augustus in 27 BC.
