      LEAVING SCHOOL FOR UNIVERSITY

      Going away to college or university can present young people with a number of challenges. Home life, (0) normal circumstances, has provided them with a supportive environment which has (1) them through times of difficulty and stress. Once away from home, however, they are (2) on their own resources to create that type of social network around them again from (3) .

      Sometimes, but not always of course, this prospect can seem overwhelming, particularly if the student (4) to be more introverted or has difficulty in (5) out to other members of their peer group. The whole process requires a certain effort on the part of the student.

If the student knows that they can still turn to them for advice and that their family  will understand their perceptions of overload and anxiety, then this will help them to overcome those feelings and move on.       Bridges

       

      Bridges are vital to our systems of travel but we quite often take them for (0) . Together with tunnels, bridges enable us to access (1) places such as islands and also cut our journey times down.

      The Forth Bridge, just north of Edinburgh, was built in the late 19th century and it has quite a history. (2) , ferries were used to transport people across the estuary but with the increasing (3) of rail travel from around 1850, the need for a rail bridge was rapidly becoming of (4) importance. However, early (5) to build a bridge across the neighbouring River Tay led to disaster: in 1879, a violent storm (6) the bridge to collapse just as a train was passing over it. There were no survivors.

      However, new designs for the Forth Bridge were approved in the 1880s and over 4,500 men took (7) in the building process. This spectacular bridge, now (8) by two other bridges for road traffic and pedestrians or cyclists, stretches for 2.5 kilometres over the water. It has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
