On 21 October 1520, at 52º in the southern latitude, we found a strait by miracle.
It is surrounded by high mountains covered with snow. It leads to another sea, which we called the peaceful sea, or Pacific Ocean.
There was a terrible storm during the night and we were forced to pull up the anchors and let our ships drift around the bay.
We thought that two ships were lost, but after a while they returned.
