• The monarchy, the republic and the Empire (the height of and the fall of). 
• Note the following dates and the events that accompanied them: 753 B.C., 509 B.C, 495 B.C., 44 B.C., 27 B.C., 212, 380, 395, 476.
• Mark the periods in brackets on the timeline. Punic wars. (264 B.C.–146 B.C.), third century crisis (235-284).

Read the text and answer the questions.

Remember, Roman, that you have to govern the people by suppressing them with your power (that is what an empire signifires). These are the tricks you will use: forgive those who obey and defeat the proud, and, in times of peace, enforce your customs (Roman rules of conduct). 

a) The poet Virgil wrote The Aeneid during the Emperor
Augustus’ reign. What future did the Romans think they
had during this period?

b) Do some research on Virgil and summarise the story
told in The Aeneid.

c) Can you think of another group or country which is
currently trying to suppress other people because they
believe it is their right?

Print out the map or one similar and:

a) In three different colours, draw the territories which were conquered during the different periods in the history of Rome.

b) Name the Roman provinces which are numbered on the map.

c) Highlight the limes (fortified boundaries) and trace the boundary between the Western and Eastern Roman Empires.

Look at the sculptures and write which period of Roman art they are from and why. Include a brief description.
